Intumescent Coating | Products Range | System S
Unlike boarding and spray solutions, Nullifire intumescent coatings enable designers to use the structure as an integral part of the aesthetic design of the building. In addition, the advanced "thin film high solids" technology of Nullifire coatings ensures maximum protection, and enables a high quality finish to be achieved, akin to conventional decorative paint systems.
Innovator in water-based intumescent systems
Nullifire S707 is the most advanced range of water-based intumescent coating available today, fully tested and approved the S707 range offer fire protection from 30 to 120 minutes.
These water-based systems are also fast and easy to apply to in-situ steelwork, by spray or brush, and safe to use even in confined spaces. They are environmentally friendly and have no solvent odours and are therefore suitable for on-and off-site application.
Unlike solvent systems, Nullifire water-based coatings dry quickly to a smooth, hard finish, minimising the risk of damage. Compared with solvent-based solutions, Nullifire water-based coatings can cut application times by up to a half, thereby reducing installation costs and allowing faster access for following trades.
The Nullifire System S range of 6 basecoat systems offers unrivalled choice and performance for the protection of all structural steelwork:
- Complete water-borne range of coatings providing 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes protection
- Complete solvent-borne range of coatings providing 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes protection
- On-site and off-site application
- For internal and external steelwork
Versatile systems with proven performance
- All systems are independently tested and certified to BS 476 Part 20-21: 1987 and ASFP "Yellow Book" approved 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes protection
- Smooth, robust, decorative surface enables the architect to use the structural steelwork as an integral part of the building design
- Maximum protection from a space-saving thin film. Hi-Build technology means many applications only require a single coat
- Top Seal not required in non-decorative areas of C1 and some C2 buildings

Thinner film, faster application
The hi-solids content of System S Basecoats enables equivalent fire protection to be achieved with a thinner, faster-drying film:
- Reducing application time
- Cutting overall site costs
- Minimising risks to other trades and to the general public
Smooth, robust finish
System S Basecoats provide an ideal base for decorative top seal finishes. However, the robust quality of the finish also means:
- Exceptional versatility
- No need for top seal in non-decorative areas of C1 and some C2 buildings
- Smooth, fibre-free surface
- Easy to clean and maintain
Protection and decoration
System S intumescent basecoats provide a durable and attractive surface, similar to a paint finish. However, in a fire, they expand to many times their original film thickness. This provides an insulating foam-like coating or "char" to protect steelwork against heat build-up and the effects of fire.
Nullifire System S Basecoats form part of a 3-layer system, which consists of:
Primer
To protect steel against corrosion and prepare the surface. This provides a key for the application of the basecoat.
Basecoat
Applied to a measured thickness to provide the specified level of fire protection.
Top Seal
A hard decorative finish to seal in the basecoat and provide an attractive, high quality appearance.
Primer and top seal compatibility
It is vital that both the primer and top seal are compatible with the basecoat to ensure the integrity of the system in terms of fire performance and durability.
Nullifire offers a fully tested range of primers and decorative top seals. For details, see:
Nullifire has also tested and approved primers and top seals from other manufacturers for compatibility with System S Basecoats. However, it is essential to check overcoat timings and other relevant data with the coating manufacturer concerned. Nullifire strongly recommends that a primer and top seal compatibility check is carried out prior to application.
If you are in any way concerned about the compatibility of specific primers or top seals with System S Basecoats, please contact Nullifire Technical Services Department.
Application
System S Basecoats are ready for use. No thinning is required. They are easy to spray using conventional airless manual or automated spray systems. They may also be applied by roller or brush, using a "laying on" technique to avoid heavy brush marks.
