A new intumescent coating speeds the build of a retail development with onsite application using the only water-based coating on the market offering 30-120 minutes fire protection.
Like many new and challenging retail projects, the Primark store in Glasgow’s Argyll Street has been constructed to a tight schedule. Various techniques were used to ensure that the timetable could be met – including the use of a new intumescent coating from Nullifire.
Nullifire S707 -120 is the latest addition to the company’s established range of water-based intumescent coatings. In line with the current need for extended fire protection, it offers fire resistance for internal structural steel for up to 120 minutes. However, despite these performance advantages, Nullifire S707-120 is also ideal for rapid application.
Unlike solvent based multiple coat systems that can remain soft for months, Nullifire S707-120 dries quickly cutting application time by up to a half, and provides a smooth hard finish which is attractive enough to leave as the final surface.
John Aitkin, Technical Services Manager for Nullifire explains one of the reasons for the success of Nullifire S707-120 is due to its ability to provide the thickness of coating required for 2 hour fire protection in reduced time.
"Nullifire S707-120 offers faster drying time thanks to its Hi-Solids content and Hi-build technology. It can be applied faster by spray or brush as the project requires, and because it is water-based there are none of the health and safety worries inevitable with solvent-based products. S707-120 is also fully tested to BS 476: Part 20-21: 1987 for up to 120 minutes fire protection, and is fast and easy to apply by spray or brush. It is also ICF Compliant and Certifier Approved - three key standards every specifier and contractor should look for in an intumescent water-based fire protection coating."
Specialist contractors AP Orr Fire Protection used 2000 drums of S707-120. Malcolm Stuart is the managing director of AP Orr. He praises Nullifire S707-120 for its ease and speed of application. "We were pleased to see Nullifire specified as the supplier. We found the 120-minute version of their product very easy to apply. It is easy to get up to thickness, and it meant we could complete the job faster – which was ideal for us as well as the following contractors who could get on to site quicker as a result."
Nullifire S607 and S605 decorative intumescent coatings provide fire protection for all structural steelwork in the recent redevelopment of the west end of The Rose Bowl, the Hampshire County Cricket Ground.
Safety and aesthetics were the key issues facing specifiers for the fire protection and decoration of the supporting steel structure of the new west end stand at The Rose Bowl, the county home of cricket in Hampshire. Both criteria, as well as exceptional cost effectiveness, were met by Nullifire Systems S607 and S605.
Nullifire S607 is a fast drying water-borne intumescent basecoat for internal use. Nullifire S605 is a high performance external grade intumescent coating. Both have been extensively proven in use, as well as in independent tests, for up to 2 hours fire resistance to BS 476: Part 20/22. They are easy to apply by spray or brush.
A hard, protective finish was provided by Nullifire S615 semi-gloss acrylic Top seal. This robust, highly decorative seal is suitable for internal and external application. Available in any BS or RAL colour, white was, appropriately, selected for the Rose Bowl. The durability and UV resistance of S615 ensures that, rain or shine, the colour remains bright and undimmed. And whatever might happen on the pitch, spectators in the west end can watch, secure in the knowledge that they are seated beneath a structure protected by the UK’s leading supplier of passive fire protection systems: Nullifire.
The Nullifire fire protection systems were applied by Fire Technology Ltd., of Margate, Kent (Tel. 01843 228899). Main contractor was Powells Shopfitting Services Ltd.
Nullifire fire protection systems for structural steel, as well as gap and penetration seals, were chosen in the construction of the new home of Southampton Football Club, the 36,000 seat capacity St Mary’s Stadium.
With safety an absolute priority, specifiers looked to the solid reputation for quality and reliability of Nullifire fire protection systems in the construction of St Mary’s Stadium, the new home of Southampton Football Club. The thorough and expert technical support provided by Nullifire, together with the exceptional cost effectiveness of Nullifire products, were also key factors in the selection of Nullifire systems for this major development.
Nullifire S607 was applied at a 1 hour fire rating to the internal structural steelwork, including universal beams, columns and hollow sections. Used with TS616 acrylic Top seal, these systems provide a wholly water-based passive fire protection system – easy and safe to apply by spray or brush even in confined areas. Fast drying, the Nullifire water-based systems also ensure that work can proceed with minimum delay, thus helping early contract completion. Nullifire TS616 provides a hard, protective seal for the S607 basecoat, offering a fully tested fire protection system with up to 2 hours fire rating to BS 473: Part 20.
For external steelwork, Nullifire S605 high performance grade intumescent basecoat was chosen, with TS615 Top seal providing an exceptionally durable finish with high weathering and UV resistance. The specifiers for St Mary’s chose a white finish from the extensive range of BS and RAL colours available.
Gap and penetration seals
Internally, Nullifire fire stop seals and fire barriers were used to seal construction joints and service penetrations. Nullifire’s fire stopping products include System J2000 intumescent compressible strip, M701 Acrylic Mastic and M703 Silicone Mastic, B240 Fire Rated Compound, B805/B10 Lightweight Fire Curtains, as well as Pipe Wraps and Pipe Collars for all sizes of pipe, and the Nullifire Multi-fit Collar for 55, 82 and 110mm pipework.
For the main part of the stadium construction, Nullifire fire protection systems were applied by Boss Fire Protection (Tel. 0141 620 1331). Nullifire fire protection within the corporate hospitality area under the stadium was applied by Elite Fire Protection of Southampton (07885 660778). Main contractors were Barr Construction.

So, on the 30th floor, the occupants can enjoy spectacular views over London, safe in the knowledge that the structural steelwork is protected by state-of-the-art Nullifire systems.
Both Nullifire S607 and S605 are tested and certified to BS 476 Part 20-21: 1987 and ASFP "Yellow Book" approved for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes protection.
Water-borne and halogen free, Nullifire S607 has a low VOC content, making it ideal for use in less well ventilated areas.
As a solvent-borne coating, Nullifire S605 is suitable for both internal and external applications.
Both S605 and S607 may be applied by airless spray, brush or roller. They dry quickly to a smooth, fibre-free surface which is robust and easy to clean and maintain. A top seal is not required in non-decorative areas of C1 and C2 buildings, further enhancing application times. However, where required, the specially formulated Nullifire top seal is available in a wide range of colours to provide enduring protection and decoration.
Thinner film, faster application
The unique Nullifire combination of Hi-Solids content and Hi-Build technology ensures that minimum film thickness is required to achieve the required fire protection. This reduces application time and overall site costs, enabling fast-track programming and minimum disruption to following trades.
