Fire Protection Testing for Posi Joists, HDPE Fusion Couplings & VESDA Pipes | EI120 Certified

Sakthy Ram / 18 February 2026

We are pleased to confirm that we have tested solutions for Posi Joists,  HDPE Fusion couplings and Vesda pipes.

Posi Joists

Posi Joists are advanced structural timber joists that feature parallel timber chords connected by galvanised steel webs. This hybrid design results in a strong yet lightweight open web structure, making them ideal for various applications in both residential and commercial construction.

Tricky to fire stop due to the non-combustible metal web and timber elements, our test was conducted in Flexible or Rigid wall 100mm+ using FB750 Intubatt (pattress mounted plus 100mm sleeve) and FS702 Intumastic Fire Resistant Acrylic Sealant.  Test achieved EI120 – 2 hours fire resistance

HDPE Fusion Couplings

HDPE fusion couplings, often used in plumbing, join 2 plastic pipes – the copper coil inside the coupling fuses the two pipes together.  Previous tests have not been straightforward as there were both combustible (plastic pipes) and non-combustible (copper coils) elements in the same test.

Our most recent test, using the worst case scenario of the HDPE fitting situated actually within the seal, was done for use in Flexible and Rigid walls of 100mm + using 2 x compression or pattress  mounted FB750 Intubatt and FS709 HP Intumescent sealant , achieving EI120 - 2 hours fire resistance.

VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus)

VESDA smoke aspiration pipes are a network of specialised plastic tubes that continuously draw air from a protected area to a highly sensitive, laser-based detector. This provides very early fire detection in critical environments like data centres, warehouses, and cleanrooms, even before visible smoke appears, by analysing air for pre-combustion particles.

These pipes are key to the system's performance, using various configurations (ceiling, floor, duct) and software (ASPIRE) for design, ensuring reliable detection despite airflow challenges.

As part of the active fire protection system, these pipes pass through compartment lines therefore still need to have passive fire protection installed around them

Tested for use through flexible or rigid walls of 100mm+, using 2 compression fitted FB750 Intubatt and FS709 HP Intumescent Sealant, the result showed EI120 – 2 hours fire resistance.  Following increased demand for PFP tested systems in datacentres, warehouses cleanrooms we are pleased to share this successful result.
