Invisible Infrastructure: Fire and Acoustics as the Foundations of Architectural Experience

Abbie Bradshaw / 22 October 2025

Design and architecture are one of the key pillars of building a structure. Without thoughtful design and choice of carefully chosen materials, a building risks being unfit for purpose and failing to comply with building requirements. Materials need to be practical and compatible, but they also need to be striking and aesthetic to give identity to a building in what can be an already over saturated skyline.

Within this article, delve into how Nullifire products: Perlifoc HP Eco + and Farbocustic are the foundations for Architectural Experience. How do they provide safety, comfort and building identity?

Nullifire and Carboline's Perlifoc HP Eco is a gypsum-based mortar that provides passive fire protection to a variety of substrates: steel, concrete and composite slab structural elements. The product provides safety to structures in for form of fire protection, with up to 240 minutes, whether that is load bearing (R), integrity (E), insulation (I) or all three (REI).  Perlifoc HP Eco+ provides this protection to internal structures only, but when combined within a system of Carboline primers and topcoats, it can be used in up to a C4 internal environment (ISO 12944).

Fire resistance periods are measured in minutes, typically ranging from 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 or 240. Perlifoc HP Eco offering up to 240 minutes passive fire protection provides Architects and Specifiers with a superior product that provides safety to the highest level. The practical benefits of Perlifoc HP Eco+, combined with Nullifire’s Farbocustic gypsum-based sound absorption mortar, present a highly compatible and visually appealing solution for creating interiors that are acoustically enhanced and sufficiently fire protected.

Flexibility in design is everything. From the desired sombre acoustics of a restaurant to the bustling levels reached in a supermarket, designing the right acoustics is imperative to mitigate unwanted sound levels.

Being able to offer a wide colour range is a key feature for Perlifoc HP Eco + and Farbocustic, it allows architects and designers the freedom to choose the right colour for the right location. Whether that be to match the corporate branding colours or to achieve the perfect mood for any given area.

Farbocustic can be manufactured in a plethora of different colours from the RAL & BS colour charts, meaning there is no additional work from the applicators side such as adding a dye to the mix during application or applying a topcoat, saving time and money. Whilst Perlifoc HP Eco + can only be manufactured in white and grey, it can be top coated using Carboline Carbothane 134 CG. This topcoat is available in most RAL & BS shades and can be supplied in matt, satin, semi-gloss and gloss allowing architects and designers to find their perfect solution.

Passive fire protection and acoustics play a vital role in providing safety and sensory experience in a building. Nullifire’s Perlifoc HP Eco+ and Farbocustic are prime examples of how technical performance and design flexibility can coexist. These products offer architects and specifiers solutions that meet stringent safety standards while enhancing aesthetic appeal.
