The Project

Contractors building new offices and warehouses in Staffordshire have used Nullifire’s SC902 to complete the passive fire protection of the exposed steel frames successfully despite harsh winter conditions. Main contractor, McLaren Construction, is building the new Redhill Business Park in Stafford for Staffordshire County Council. The 40-acre greenfield site comprises seven plots earmarked for industrial, manufacturing and warehousing development.

Plots 3 and 5 are currently at an advanced stage of construction, the steel frames having been erected during Autumn 2016.The structural steelwork had to be treated with an intumescent paint before the external cladding and internal finishes were erected which meant the work had to be done as winter closed in.Specialist contractor, MGN Fire, used Nullifire’s SC902, a low VOC, one-coat, high- build product to provide a fire rating of up to 120 minutes.

Designed primarily for off-site use, SC902 is a fast-curing water-based product that does not produce a prolonged solvent odour and is safe to use in enclosed spaces. However, its fast-curing properties and suitability for application at very low temperatures mean that it is ideal for use in locations exposed to cold, wet weather.

“MGN Fire carried out the work in November and December last year,” says Nullifire area sales representative, Joanna Strickland. “There were temperature and humidity issues which meant that SC902 was essentially the only product suitable for these conditions,” she adds.“SC902 is touch dry in one hour and fully cured in eight hours so it’s virtually weather-proof. It’s also unique – no other manufacturer has a water-based intumescent product that cures this quickly,” says Joanna.

Introduced about two years ago, SC902 is offered by a number of specially-trained Nullifire-approved contractors of which MGN Fire is one.
